Brazilian Multidisciplinary Artist

Tarik Mendes Brazilian multidisciplinary contemporary artist

Tarik Mendes (b. 1992) is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist based in New York City whose practice explores the relationship between painting, sculpture, material, and architectural space.

Working across painting, sculpture, mixed media, layered net and screen-based constructions, drawing, photography, furniture, and design, Mendes develops works that challenge conventional distinctions between image and object.

Central to his practice is the use of layered net and screen-based materials. Rather than relying on the traditional fixed picture plane, Mendes constructs permeable surfaces through repeated layers of translucent material and mixed media.

These physical layers create depth within the artwork itself. Images and fragments emerge, recede, overlap, and dissolve as light, shadow, movement, and the viewer’s position change.

Painting, Sculpture & Material

Mendes’s practice investigates materiality, transparency, repetition, accumulation, and perception.

His layered constructions exist between painting and sculpture, transforming the surface from a static boundary into an active spatial structure.

This visual language extends into three-dimensional works, where net-based structures, mixed media, found and constructed materials, and sculptural forms expand his investigation of space beyond the wall.

Across the practice, Mendes explores relationships between density and transparency, construction and erosion, visibility and concealment, presence and disappearance.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across multiple countries.
