The Brooklyn entrepreneur discusses creativity, business ownership, anime, mental health, friendship, and why protecting your ideas is just as important as creating them.
Some people discover their career path through careful planning.

Others find it through unexpected opportunities.

For entrepreneur, creative director, and producer Shakira Terrain, that opportunity arrived while she was sitting in a high school classroom drawing anime.

What began as a chance encounter eventually led her into the worlds of design, branding, creative direction, entrepreneurship, and business ownership.

During our conversation, we explored everything from creativity and self-expression to mental health, friendship, intellectual property, and the lessons she wishes she had learned sooner.

What emerged was a powerful reminder that success is rarely about talent alone. It is also about protecting your work, believing in yourself, and surrounding yourself with the right people.

Growing Up in Brooklyn

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Shakira credits much of her perspective to growing up in one of the most culturally diverse places in the world.

Surrounded by people from different backgrounds, religions, nationalities, and experiences, she learned early how important it is to listen, communicate, and respect perspectives different from her own.

That exposure shaped the way she views both business and life.

Rather than seeing differences as barriers, she sees them as opportunities to learn.

The diversity of Brooklyn helped her develop a strong sense of identity while remaining open to the experiences of others.

The Opportunity That Changed Everything

As a freshman in high school, Shakira spent much of her time drawing anime.

One day, a visitor noticed her artwork and invited her to interview for an internship program.

That opportunity led her to the Sweat Equity Enterprises program at Mark Echo Enterprises, where she was introduced to the realities of product development, branding, marketing, and design.

Working alongside professionals from major companies such as Nissan, Best Buy, RadioShack, Skechers, and other leading brands, she learned how ideas move from concept to marketplace.

More importantly, she learned how to present ideas, communicate value, and understand the business side of creativity.

Those experiences would become the foundation for her future entrepreneurial journey.

The Influence of Anime and Creativity

Long before entrepreneurship entered the picture, creativity served as a refuge.

As a child, Shakira found comfort in drawing and storytelling.

Anime became an important influence, offering narratives that explored complex emotions, challenges, and human experiences.

For her, drawing was more than a hobby.

It was a safe space.

Whenever life became difficult, creativity offered a way to process emotions and express ideas that could not always be put into words.

Years later, that same creative curiosity continues to shape the work she produces today.

Preserving Memories

One of the most touching moments of our conversation centered on family.

Shakira shared how her grandmother carefully preserved her childhood drawings, collecting and organizing them over the years.

Those drawings have become more than sketches.

They are time capsules.

Looking back at them allows her to revisit specific moments, emotions, and experiences from different stages of her life.

For creative people, preserving work is often about more than documentation.

It becomes a record of growth.

A record of who we were and how we became who we are today.

Understanding the Value of Artists

Throughout our conversation, Shakira repeatedly emphasized the importance of respecting creative labor.

Too often, people underestimate the amount of thought, emotion, research, and effort that goes into creating meaningful work.

A drawing, photograph, design, film, painting, or piece of writing rarely appears by accident.

Behind every finished project is a story, a process, and countless hours of work.

As creators, it is easy to focus on the final result.

Shakira reminds us that the journey behind the work deserves recognition as well.

Protecting Your Ideas

One of the most valuable lessons Shakira shared came from her experience as a business owner.

Early in her career, she collaborated on projects without fully understanding the importance of contracts, ownership agreements, and intellectual property protection.

Eventually, she found herself in a situation where work she helped create was legally claimed by someone else.

The experience changed the way she approached business.

Today, she strongly encourages artists, entrepreneurs, designers, and creators to protect themselves before entering partnerships.

Contracts matter.

Documentation matters.

Ownership matters.

Talent alone is not enough.

Understanding the business side of creativity is just as important as developing creative skills.

Mental Health and Emotional Boundaries

When the conversation turned toward mental health, Shakira spoke candidly about the importance of emotional boundaries.

One of the most influential figures in her life has been her mother, whose guidance continues to shape the way she navigates challenges.

Through experience, she has learned not to take everything personally and not to allow negativity to consume her energy.

Protecting mental health often means being selective about the people, environments, and conversations we allow into our lives.

It also means recognizing that not every conflict deserves a response.

Sometimes the healthiest decision is to walk away.

Friendship, Loyalty, and Authenticity

Another recurring theme throughout our discussion was friendship.

Shakira believes genuine friendship is revealed during difficult moments rather than successful ones.

Anyone can celebrate your victories.

The real test comes when life becomes complicated.

Who answers the phone?

Who shows up when there is nothing to gain?

Who remains supportive when circumstances change?

For Shakira, authentic relationships are built on honesty, respect, accountability, and mutual growth.

Those qualities matter far more than popularity, influence, or social status.

Entrepreneurship and Freedom

One reason Shakira chose entrepreneurship was the desire to create a life with greater flexibility and independence.

Building a business is not easy.

The early years often require long hours, sacrifice, and relentless dedication.

But entrepreneurship also offers something valuable: the ability to create your own path.

Rather than building someone else’s vision, entrepreneurs have the opportunity to build something of their own.

That freedom continues to motivate her as she expands her businesses and explores new creative opportunities.

Advice for Young Creatives

When asked what advice she would give young artists and entrepreneurs, Shakira’s answer was clear.

Learn the business side.

Protect your work.

Read contracts.

Understand ownership rights.

Do not assume everyone has your best interests at heart.

Most importantly, never underestimate the value of your ideas.

Creativity has value.

Your work has value.

And understanding that value is often the first step toward building a sustainable career.

Final Thoughts

What stood out most during my conversation with Shakira Terrain was her balance of creativity and practicality.

She understands the importance of imagination, storytelling, and artistic expression.

But she also understands the realities of business, ownership, and self-protection.

Her journey demonstrates that success is not simply about having talent.

It is about developing the confidence to trust yourself, the discipline to keep learning, and the wisdom to protect what you create.

In a world where ideas move quickly and attention spans continue to shrink, Shakira reminds us that creativity still matters—and that creators deserve to be valued.
