Explore Young Joon Kwok at the Whitney Biennial 2026, where sculpture, body casting, mirrored surfaces, and collaborative sound transform identity into a collective experience.

Through sculpture, mirrored surfaces, body casting, and collaborative sound, Young Joon Kwok creates an immersive environment where identity becomes collective, fluid, and continuously transforming.

At the Whitney Biennial 2026, Young Joon Kwok presents a work centered on community, transformation, and collective identity.

Born in Queens and based in Los Angeles, Kwok creates sculptures using casts taken from members of their queer and trans community. Rather than presenting the body as singular or fixed, these fragments come together to create something shared.

Kwok describes this emerging form as a “collective rising body.”

The Collective Rising Body

The idea of the collective body is central to Kwok’s practice.

Individual casts are brought together and transformed into a new sculptural presence. Each fragment begins with an individual body, but within the finished work, those distinctions become less stable.

The sculpture instead suggests a body formed through relationships, community, and shared experience.

It becomes a way of imagining identity not as something isolated within one person, but as something continuously shaped through connections with others.

Divine Dance of Soft Revolt

For the Whitney Biennial 2026, Kwok presents Divine Dance of Soft Revolt, a sculpture that embodies this idea of transformation.

Its mirrored, glittering surfaces create an object that seems to change depending on where the viewer stands.

Light moves across it. Reflections shift. The surrounding gallery becomes incorporated into its surface.

Most importantly, viewers can encounter their own reflections within the sculpture.

The audience is therefore no longer entirely separate from the work.

By visually drawing viewers into its surface, Divine Dance of Soft Revolt expands the idea of the collective body even further.

Soft Revolt Jams, Glittered

The sculptural installation is accompanied by an immersive soundscape titled Soft Revolt Jams, Glittered.

Created collaboratively with musicians from Kwok’s community, the sound component extends the work beyond physical form.

The installation becomes both visual and sonic.

Rather than encountering a sculpture as a silent, isolated object, visitors enter an environment shaped by bodies, reflections, sound, collaboration, and presence.

The collaborative nature of the music reinforces one of the project’s central ideas: creation itself can be collective.

Softness as a Form of Revolt

The language of “soft revolt” introduces an important tension.

Revolt is often associated with confrontation, disruption, and force. Kwok pairs that idea with softness—suggesting another way of imagining resistance and transformation.

Community, care, collaboration, pleasure, and collective presence can themselves become powerful gestures.

The work creates space for transformation without requiring identity to become fixed or reduced to a single form.

Instead, bodies and identities can remain changing, interconnected, and open.

Seeing Yourself Within the Artwork

The mirrored surfaces make the viewer’s presence especially important.

As visitors move around the installation, they see fragments of themselves reflected alongside the sculpture and surrounding environment.

Those reflections are never completely stable.

They change with movement and perspective.

The effect reinforces the larger ideas within Kwok’s practice: identity is relational, and our understanding of ourselves is continually shaped by our relationships with other people and the environments around us.

Community at the Whitney Biennial 2026

Within the Whitney Biennial 2026, Kwok’s installation becomes a space of affirmation and collective presence.

The work does not simply represent community from a distance. Community is embedded in its creation through the bodies used to produce the casts, the musicians involved in its soundscape, and ultimately the visitors whose reflections become part of the installation.

Young Joon Kwok’s Divine Dance of Soft Revolt transforms sculpture into a collective experience—one where bodies, sound, reflection, community, and identity come together in a continuously evolving form.
